Equine Reiki: A Holistic Treatment for Horses

Benefits and Reactions of Reiki for Equine Well-Being

Reiki is known for its ability to promote physical, emotional, and mental well-being in humans and animals alike. In the equine world, this non-invasive therapy is gaining momentum as it draws the interest of horse owners, trainers and veterinarians. Its gentle approach and ability to complement traditional veterinary treatments make it a valuable tool for promoting the health and well-being of horses.

How Equine Reiki works

Equine reiki works by encouraging the natural flow of energy throughout a horse’s body, supporting its overall health and vitality. In a healthy horse, energy moves freely, promoting physical, emotional, and mental balance. However, various factors such as stress, injury, illness, or emotional trauma can disrupt this flow, leading to blockages or imbalances that may manifest as physical symptoms or behavioural changes. Reiki aims to restore harmony by gently releasing these blockages and allowing energy to circulate smoothly once again, helping the horse to heal and thrive.

Application of Reiki to Equines

Equine Reiki follows the same principles as human Reiki but is tailored to the unique needs and sensitivities of horses. I work either by gently placing my hands on the horse or by hovering my hands an inch or so above the horse

Typical responses of horses to Reiki treatment

There are many wonderful aspects of treating horses with Reiki for example, they hold no scepticism, they have no pre-conceived expectations about their outcome, and they are totally transparent, there are simply no filters in terms of their physical and behavioural responses! These unfiltered responses, whether subtle or pronounced, are a powerful guide to help tailor the treatment session to the horse

Responses can vary widely from one horse to another; some common reactions include:

Relaxation and Calmness

One of the most frequently observed responses in horses during reiki treatment is a state of deep relaxation. Horses may lower their heads, close their eyes, and display a softened expression. They might shift their weight, relax one hind leg, or even lie down. This behaviour indicates that the horse is comfortable and receptive to the calming energy being provided.

Yawning and Chewing

Yawning and chewing are also signs of relaxation and the release of tension in horses. These behaviours are often seen during or after a reiki session, suggesting that the treatment is helping the horse to release stress and reach a state of tranquillity.

Movement and Realignment

Some horses may show signs of self-adjustment and realignment during reiki treatment. They might stretch, shake, or move their bodies in ways that indicate a release of physical tension or discomfort. These movements can be seen as the horse

Emotional Release

Horses, like humans, can carry deep-seated emotions from past experiences. Reiki can facilitate the release of these emotions, leading to a more balanced and contented state. Horses may exhibit behaviours such as sighing, licking, indicating the release of pent-up emotions.

Benefits of Reiki for Horses

The benefits of Reiki for horses extend beyond the immediate responses observed during a session. Regular reiki treatments can contribute to the overall well-being and health of horses in various ways, including:

Pain Relief and Healing

Reiki can aid in the healing process of injuries, surgeries and help alleviate pain. The energy flow helps to stimulate the body's natural healing mechanisms, promoting faster recovery and reducing inflammation.

Improved Immune Function

By promoting relaxation and reducing stress, reiki can enhance the immune system of horses. A stronger immune system helps horses to better resist illnesses and recover more quickly from infections.

Emotional Balance

Reiki supports emotional well-being by helping horses to release negative emotions and trauma. This can result in a more balanced and content demeanour, reducing anxiety and behavioural issues.

Enhanced Performance

Horses that receive regular reiki treatments may experience improved performance in their activities, whether they are involved in sports, work, or leisure. The increased relaxation and reduced tension contribute to better focus and coordination.

Preventative Therapy

Equine reiki is regularly used as an integral part of comprehensive horse care, particularly when uses as a preventative therapy. By helping to keep energy flowing smoothly and maintaining the equilibrium routine reiki sessions can help prevent the build-up of stress or minor imbalances before they develop into more significant issues. This proactive approach not only sustains the horse’s overall health but also contributes to a calmer temperament and greater resilience in the face of daily challenges.

Please note

It is important to note that, under the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966 (as amended), only qualified veterinary surgeons are permitted to diagnose, prescribe, or carry out surgical procedures on animals in the UK. Complementary therapies such as Reiki may be used as supportive care, but they should always be conducted with the knowledge and consent of a vet. This ensures that the primary health needs of the horse are addressed appropriately and that complementary treatments are safely integrated into the overall care plan.
