Animal Reiki
A Gentle Healing Practice for All Creatures Great and Small
The true beauty of Reiki lies in its simplicity and its effectiveness, elements that make it an ideal therapy for all animals great and small.
Reiki, a Japanese energy healing technique, is based on the belief that energy flows through all living things. When this energy is balanced and free-flowing, health and harmony are maintained. When there is an imbalance or blockage in an animal
Whether used for relaxation, emotional healing, or as a complement to conventional care, Animal Reiki is designed to enhance the well-being and happiness of animals with the following benefits . . .
This gentle practice is suitable for all animals, whether domestic pets like dogs and cats, or larger creatures such as horses and livestock. A session typically takes place in a quiet, comfortable environment where the animal feels safe. The practitioner may sit near the animal or gently lay hands on if the animal is comfortable. Sessions can last anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour, depending on the animal's needs and responses. The animal always leads the session, if they wish to move away or end the session, their wishes are respected.
Practitioners often undergo specialised training in Animal Reiki to ensure they understand animal behaviour and safety. Ethical practice is paramount; practitioners must obtain consent from the animal’s guardian and never force interaction. The focus is always on compassion, respect, and gentle intention.
Animal Reiki can be beneficial for pets experiencing anxiety, ageing animals, or those in palliative care. Many animal shelters, rescue organisations, and sanctuaries use Reiki to help traumatised or stressed animals adjust to new environments. While Reiki does not replace veterinary treatment, it can complement medical care and enhance overall well-being.
It is important to note that, under the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966 (as amended), only qualified veterinary surgeons are permitted to diagnose, prescribe, or carry out surgical procedures on animals in the UK. Complementary therapies such as Reiki may be used as supportive care, but they should always be conducted with the knowledge and consent of a vet. This ensures that the primary health needs of the horse are addressed appropriately and that complementary treatments are safely integrated into the overall care plan.
